A recent article in the Stanford Social Innovation Review entitled “Philanthropy’s Missing Trillions” caught our attention. Its authors, Jennifer Xia and Patrick Schmitt, found that while 90 percent of American adults make a charitable gift each year, fewer than six percent include a charitable bequest in their will or estate plan. Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) and its affiliates, The Indianapolis Foundation and Legacy Fund, serving Hamilton County, awarded 156 scholarships totaling over $1.2 million for the 2018-2019 academic year. Recipients received up to $40,000 and were chosen by multiple committees comprised of donors and community volunteers. Women’s Fund of Central Indiana is committing over $1 million to mental health services and programming for women and girls. A portion of the money, nearly $300,000, will support the launch of a Give an Hour office in Indianapolis that will offer one-on-one mental health counseling for marginalized women and girls.
