The Summer Youth Program Fund (SYPF), a funding collaborative of 10 local and national partners, announced grants totaling $2,928,182 will be awarded to 169 not-for-profit organizations serving youth in Marion County. The grants will fund 210 summertime programs, activities and experiences for individuals ages 4-24.
SYPF supports activities and programs such as career pathways, athletics, performing arts, youth employment, nutrition and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) education. More than 93,000 youth were served in 2018. A few of the programs funded in 2019 include:
- Edna Martin Christian Center – ($34,500) Leadership & Legacy Summer Youth Program
- Indiana Black Expo, Inc. – ($27,650) Opportunity Zone Career Exploration Program
- LifeSmart Youth – ($17,000) Health Education and Relationship Training (HEART)
- Pathway Resource Center – ($67,000) Training Youth for Success (TYFS)
- Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis – ($15,000) Strings and Jazzy Things Music Camp
- The Recovery High School at Fairbanks Inc. – ($15,000) Summer of Hope Program

To enhance the SYPF experience, Lilly Endowment awarded additional grants, including $150,000 to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana for the provision of summer weekend meals for youth participating in more than 40 SYPF funded programs. Lilly Endowment also provided a $255,000 grant to the Marion County Commission on Youth (MCCOY) to maintain the SYPF website, provide adult and youth staff training, support organizations with program enhancements, and to present end-of-summer educational awards to young people for exemplary service. Additionally, a total of 41 organizations that are receiving SYPF grants this year are also receiving modest capital grants totaling $800,000 to improve their facilities, provide transportation to youth or otherwise enhance their summer programs.

Founded in 1995 by The Indianapolis Foundation, an affiliate of Central Indiana Community Foundation, and Lilly Endowment, the Summer Youth Program Fund was the first funding collaborative dedicated to summer youth programs in the United States. Since 1995, the collaborative has contributed more than $50 million in general operating and capital support to Marion County organizations that provide summertime programs that enrich the lives of young people and strengthen Indianapolis neighborhoods.
