New Year’s resolutions are notorious for vanishing before the snow melts. Who can give up caffeine when the sun sets at 5 p.m.? Or spend more time in nature when it’s buried under snow?
For your consideration, here are three resolutions that nonprofits can utilize for added sustainability – nearly all of which can all be accomplished indoors over coffee.
Here’s to 2025 and a commitment to better nonprofit management!
1. Reflect On Your Mission: Recommit Or Recalibrate
Why It Matters
A study from nonprofit data researcher Candid shows that nonprofits who wield a clear, accurate mission statement are also more successful at attracting funding. Over time, however, shifting priorities and external pressures can lead to “mission drift,” diluting your focus and potentially harming your organization’s credibility and impact.
What To Do
- Review Your Mission Statement: Gather leadership and key stakeholders to evaluate your mission. Does it still align with your current activities and goals?
- Update Your Strategic Plan: If your plan is outdated, use this time to set new priorities, outline actionable steps, and incorporate feedback from donors, staff, and the community.
- Create A Case For Support: Refresh your materials to reflect your renewed mission, making it compelling for both potential donors as well as long-time partners.
2. Stay Informed on Nonprofit Policy
Why It Matters
Policy changes at the state and federal level can significantly transform the way you serve your community. Engaging with policymakers and staying informed about legislation will help make your voice heard and keep your organization prepared.
What To Do
- Build Relationships: Introduce yourself to your local, state, and federal Share stories of your impact and highlight areas of alignment in your mission.
- Subscribe to Reliable Sources: Stay updated with publications like The Chronicle of Philanthropy and local outlets such as Charitable Advisors.
- Educate Your Team: Host regular discussions on nonprofit law and policy. Use resources like the Alliance for Justice’s guide to nonprofit law in Indiana*.
- Engage in Advocacy: Identify key issues impacting your sector and organize or attend efforts to support policy that will better serve your community.
3. Stay inspired, stay hopeful
Why It Matters
The nonprofit sector’s work runs as much on passion as it does on philanthropy. Maintaining a grounded optimism and fostering connections with peers can reinvigorate your team’s sense of purpose.
What To Do
- Invest in Professional Development: Look for workshops, conferences, or continuing education opportunities hosted by community foundations, United Ways, or other local institutions.
- Foster Peer Networks: Join or create forums where likeminded nonprofit leaders can share experiences and solutions.
- Prioritize Well-being: Encourage staff to balance work with activities that help sustain high level performance. Studies abound showing the health and mood benefits of taking just a short walk (even in the snow!).
- Celebrate Wins: Regularly acknowledge and celebrate both small and significant achievements to keep the team motivated.
