Our Commitment to Fundholders

Earlier this year, we partnered with the Center for Effective Philanthropy to survey fundholders within our philanthropic collaborative, which includes the Indianapolis Foundation, Central Indiana Community Foundation, and Hamilton County Community Foundation. We asked for our fundholders’ feedback on their experience, how we might enhance support for their philanthropic goals, and improve our communication.

We are grateful to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts. We would like to share what we heard and the actions we’re taking as a result.

WHO RESPONDED
  • We received responses from approximately 18% of total fundholders (which is close to the standard industry response rate).
  • Responses represented an equitable distribution among the foundations:
    • 25% from HCCF fundholders
    • 36% from CICF fundholders
    • 39% from IF fundholders
  • Most of the respondents have worked with us for a significant period, with most establishing their funds between 2001 and 2009.
WHAT YOU SAID
  • Resource Utilization: An overwhelming 84% of respondents reported using the Collaborative’s resources, such as advice on charitable giving or attending educational programs to help achieve their philanthropic goals.
  • Satisfaction with Staff: Nearly the same number (81%) expressed satisfaction with the quality of our staff, though staff responsiveness, while strong (5.99 out of 7), was flagged as an area for improvement.
  • Interest in Giving Opportunities: Many fundholders emphasized a desire to receive more tailored information about giving opportunities that align with their personal goals.
WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON

Enhanced Communication

  • We are enhancing our strategy to bring fundholders the most relevant and up-to-date information possible.
  • Personalized newsletters tailored to each foundation.
  • Highlighting stories of fundholder impact and connecting fundholders more intentionally with the work of each foundation.
  • Providing additional updates on ways to engage when these opportunities align with fundholders’ giving interests.

More Resources and Events for Engagement

  • More opportunities to connect with the communities we serve. In 2025, expect:
    • A full calendar of events to learn how nonprofit partners are creating change in Central Indiana.
    • Opportunities to hear directly from nonprofits about ongoing challenges and needs.
    • Continued improvements to our responsiveness. We are reviewing our systems to ensure we can handle fundholder requests as efficiently as possible.

Respecting Your Philanthropic Journey

Our priority is to support your unique path. Fundholders’ goals guide our work, and we remain committed to meeting you where you are.

We are excited about the progress already underway and remain committed to creating a culture of philanthropic excellence. Together, we can continue to lead transformational impact in our community.
